Banff National Park and Lake Louise

Banff National Park and Lake Louise

Arriving in Vancouver was an interesting experience. I always heard that it’s one of the most livable cities, but after exploring downtown, it didn’t quite live up to my expectations. At all. Was it because it was cold and rainy? I am not sure, but this city wasn’t what I expected. So, on to plan B. Let’s drive to the Banff National Park to see Lake Louise as soon as possible.

I’d planned to go anyway, but instead of a quick two night trip, I decided to extend it to four days. And it was incredible! My GPS said it was an eight hour drive, so I made sure to have a comfortable car. And a fast one too, complete with winter tires, of course. I was heading into the Rocky Mountains after all.

Banff National Park

I have to admit, I didn’t know much about the Rocky Mountains and Banff National Park before, but everyone should! It’s truly one of the most beautiful parks out there. The scenery is stunning, with breathtaking contrasts between glacial rivers and rugged mountains. The wilderness certainly has an undeniable mystique. I’ve visited many mountains and national parks, and Banff stands out among them all. (Remember Norway, the Alps and Mont Blanc?)

Emerald Lake Lodge

I envisioned staying in a charming mountain lodge with a cozy fireplace, a warm ambiance, and an incredible view. And I found just that at the Emerald Lake Lodge. With century-old fireplaces and an oak bar salvaged from an 1890s Yukon saloon, this was the ideal place to unwind. There was no WiFi or TV in the rooms, as the lodge is designed for true relaxation, and that’s exactly what I did.

It was freezing in the Rockies, and on my first morning, I woke to snow on the verandah. But the days were sunny, and the scenery was incredibly photogenic. What a beautiful place!

I loved the slower pace here. Long breakfasts, work, a short walk, warming up back in my room, another stroll, and finally a delicious dinner in the main restaurant. Walking around the lake was an amazing experience, although it was quite chilly. But nothing that a warm winter coat could fix. That said, looking at all the other guests fully equipped in their winter gear, it was obvious I wasn’t prepared for the subzero temperatures.

But then again, I do spend most of the time in very hot countries.

Lake Louise

Once you start looking, photos of Lake Louise seem to be everywhere online. Each more breathtaking than the last. Are those colors even real? I couldn’t wait to visit Lake Louise, only a 20min drive from the lodge.

Lake Louise is world-renowned for its vibrant turquoise waters, framed by the Victoria Glacier and majestic mountain peaks. It’s a popular hiking destination in summer and a skiing haven in winter. This picturesque lake is a must-see in Banff National Park, especially as Moraine Lake is closed during the winter season.

However, the lake is a very popular spot, and so it was quite busy. I kind of preferred the turquoise lake view from my room at the Emerald Lake Lodge. From there I could look at overlook this amazing lake without standing in the cold. It was perfect for me.

And so…

After some amazing and relaxing days in the Rocky Mountains, Banff National Park, and the Lodge, it was time to head back to Vancouver, marking the end of my trip to Canada. This journey, along with my road trip to Niagara Falls, was definitely a highlight for me. Although I didn’t spot any bears or catch the Northern Lights in the Rockies, my days there were the perfect finale to an incredible trip.

Canada is a stunning country, and I found its nature and wilderness far more impressive than its cities. That said, I know there’s still so much more to explore here. I might be back someday. Maybe in summer for some hiking?

Thank you, Canada! Let’s go somewhere warmer now…
