I am back in Madrid, the capital of Spain. Last (and first) time I visited Madrid was in 2017 when catching up with my friend from Australia. And although this time, the temperatures were a bit cooler (no summer heatwave), the city itself is nevertheless still stunning! Driving into Madrid was quite interesting and definitely manageable. And, as I was driving, I was able to make a quick stop in the stunning ancient city Toledo as well! Gorgeous spot! Read more…
Ancient City Toledo
Toledo is a beautiful ancient city, set on a hill above the plains of Castilla-La Mancha, just south of Madrid. Toledo was actually once the capital of Spain, until 1560, when Philip II of Spain moved his court to Madrid.
The old town is great to walk around in, although not very photogenic. That said, from the stunning Toledo Cathedral to the many shops selling swords (once a major sword producer spot) and Mazipan (it’s not ‘Marzipan‘ in Spain) confectionery, this city is a must see.
Given its hilly position and the walls surrounding the old city, for me, the BEST WAY TO SEE the extend and beauty of Toledo, is from the outside. From one of the many viewing points along the tourist route. From there, the mix of cultures (Jewish, Muslim, Christians) and therefore the mix of architectures, is clearly visible. What do you think?
I have to come back when the trees are green (spring or autumn maybe?)
Let’s visit Madrid next!

Driving into Madrid
Once leaving Toledo, driving into Madrid was certainly interesting. Between the traffic and trying to find my park near the hotel, meant, I had to drive through a few ‘restricted access’ areas. Let’s hope there will be no ticket in the mail? I booked my parking online, for three days, which was only 40 Euros. Great price considering all the park houses charge Euro 32.50/day otherwise. Once the car was parked I could enjoy the city by foot.
Visit Madrid
I fell in love with Madrid the last time I was here. (Read all about my girls weekend here). And although I am not always a fan of the bigger cities, Madrid is one of my capital favourites. (Alongside London for example).
With a mix of modern infrastructure and old historic neighbourhoods and streets, Madrid is certainly a city to walk, eat and shop. If you would like more culture, make sure to see the Royal Palace. The rooms inside are unbelievably stunning. What a way to live! (Unfortunately taking photos wasn’t allowed).
I had time so I also went into the Art museum ‘Museo del Prado’. And although it has an impressive art collection, I think I am more of a ‘Michelangelo’ fan. Have you been to the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City?
Walking in Madrid
I always do plenty of steps in big cities and hardly ever use public transport or take a taxi (except Rome and Bangkok so far). Although, driving into Madrid was easy, I am always happy when I don’t have to drive in capital cities. So walking it is. A great way to visit Madrid and explore the unknown.
Because the days were still a little bit cold, especially in the morning, I tried to find and walk the streets where the sun came through the buildings. And warm up with a hot coffee along the way.
Until, on the final day, I found the perfect sunny spot. It only took some local friends to show me, that, all I had to do, is go on top of a building (Thanks Pedro). In this case, the ‘Circulo De Bellas Artes’ rooftop bar.
And so, my last afternoon in Madrid was all about enjoying the sun, overlooking the city and chatting with my friends. Perfect way to finish my Madrid and Toledo travels!
Until next time then. I will be back!
Make sure to visit Madrid as well…
