Living in Bangkok – my days in Thonglor

Living in Bangkok – my days in Thonglor

So, here I am. After two years of travelling in Europe mostly, I am back in Thailand, touring and living in Bangkok. There is not much to say about the quarantine, except that I was glad when, after 15 days, I was out on the fresh air. And first thing first. I went straight for lunch, rewarding myself with a delicious burger and french fries. Eating hospital food for 15 days is not very exciting, as you might imagine.

I was certainly looking forward to exploring the streets of Thonglor and Bangkok city again. How did it change in the year of the pandemic and in comparison to two years ago? Let’s see!

Read about my last visit to Bangkok here.

Bangkok City

With a population of over 10Mill, Bangkok is definitely a big city. Hence, there is never a dull moment here. Whether it is walking through the many shopping centres or visiting the various markets, living in Bangkok can be very exciting.

It is the year of the pandemic however. And in comparison to two years ago the lack of tourists is definitely noticeable. There are empty streets, little traffic and many tourist stores closed.

Overall, I am not quite sure how to describe this city. Known as a finance and business hub, there is certainly plenty of high-rises around. (With many more being built). There are parts of Bangkok that display a very modern and clean city. But also parts where the rubbish piles are big and clearly visible. For me, however, the contrast of new and old, mixed with the simple street life of Thai locals, is quite incredible.

I can’t think of any European city where the mix of the both would be so obvious.

And yet, I like it.

Furthermore, when you talk to a local, they will say that Bangkok city is much cleaner now, than 5 or 10 years ago. It might be. And I am sure Bangkok will evolve further throughout the years. But, regardless of what it was or what it will become, for me, living in Bangkok is quite fun.

Living in Bangkok

After sampling a few hotels in the Thonglor area, I have finally found the perfect spot to settle in for a few months. The Residence on Thonglor, with the high ceiling rooms, well equipped kitchenette, a gym and a rooftop pool, is the perfect hotel/apartment for me. I feel quite comfortable here.

And so, my days are filled with a routine of swimming, exercising, walking and enjoying the city’s vibe. I buy delicious mangos from the local store, and my breakfast cereal from the western supermarket. Whether it is walking the 2.5 km to the BTS (sky train) or catching the river ferry into town with the locals, I really enjoy living in Bangkok.

By now I have found my favourite grocery stores, my weekly lunch spots and the best massage areas to relax at.

And when the hustle and bustle from the city will get too much one day, I can always escape to the beach and the Thai islands. Who knows when that might be?
