Hello from Europe! After 6 months in Thailand, I am back in the fields of Germany, wearing my winter coats. Last year (after the escape from Spain) I based myself south of Nürnberg, in the little town Dietfurt. This time, I have chosen Oberkirch, a small village sitting at the end of the famous Schwarzwald (Black Forest), surrounded by stunning vineyards and lots of hiking trails.
Not to mention that the French border, and one my favourite towns of France, Strasbourg, are just next door. Although I still have to wait until I “officially” can cross the border to get my croissant(s).
Until then, there is lots to do on the German side of the border. E.g. exploring the various cycling paths and hiking the Schwarzwald, just to name a few. Not to mention walk up to the Oberkirch Schauenburg (Castle). Even though the weather is testing my patience at the moment. There are way too many cold and rainy days than I would ideally like.
Nevertheless, I adore this part of Germany. Especially the pretty half-timbered gingerbread-style homes. So cute!
Oberkirch Schauenburg Castle Rainy Days in Oberkirch
According to legend, the Brothers Grimm were inspired by the Black Forest (Schwarzwald) in their native country when they wrote Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty. Awesome!
However, when it is sunny on those rare occasions, the scenery and landscape around here is certainly breathtaking. The fields of Germany near Oberkirch are a mix of Strawberries as well as various flowering fruit trees. It is nice to see European Spring at its glory.
Did you know the Schwarzwald is called ‘Black forest’ originally by the Romans, due to the dark, dense trees?
I am especially excited about seeing the vineyards all green and filled with grapes, later in the season. It will make the landscape even more beautiful. Great timing to drive along the Badische Weinstraße (Wine street). Can’t wait!
My plans for Europe
So, between settling in, cycling and walking the Schwarzwald, there is lots of different things to find and do here, among the fields of Germany. Especially for an outdoor person like myself.
What are my plans for summer 2021 in Europe? Well, there is a wedding in Poland (it has been a while since the last one after all – read here). And how about cycling along the Rhine River? 1400km towards Rotterdam? At least it would be much less than the 2600km cycling trip (from Czech Republic to Spain) two years ago.
In addition, rather than cycling through the Pyrenees mountains, I might hike them this year? Maybe? That would be certainly something different. And there is still so much more to see in France. I have to practice my French after learning for 4 years!
So, either way, as you can see, there is lots to do here! Stay tuned…
