Finally made it to the city of Dubrovnik

Finally made it to the city of Dubrovnik

Stunning Dubrovnik was always the final destination of my Croatia Trip. With a small detour and stop in beautiful Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina. was a small detour along the way. But is Dubrovnik worth a visit? I have read a lot about the city of Dubrovnik and it exceeded all my expections. All of them! It certainly made me fall in love with Croatia even more. It was so great I will have to split my time in Dubrovnik into two posts (read the other one here). Mainly because I have so many amazing photos!

The Drive

Well, let’s say I was glad to be out of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Mostar was beautiful and I would definitely recommend it (read full blog here). Just stick to the main roads getting there and out again and you will be fine. Funnily once I was out of Bosnia and back in Croatia, to get to Dubrovnik I had to get through a narrow part along the coastof Bosnia and Herzegovina again, to get back to Croatia and the city of Dubrovnik. So lots of border crossing today!

City of Dubrovnik

I found a great Panorama View apartment outside of Dubrovnik which was once again the perfect base. Rain was forecasted for the next few days so, given that it was a sunny afternoon, I decided to do a quick trip to Dubrovnik. It was busy… lots and lots of people, even in May, which usually means off-season. Clearly I wasn’ the only one thinking that Dubrovnik was worth a visit.

I did a quick walk around the old town and it was magnificent.  The old town, fronting the Adriatic Sea, is encircled with massive stone walls that have been completed in the 16th century. There is a mix of buildings in baroque, renaissance and gothic style. Just stunning and beautiful. Not to mention full of narrow little streets and lots of stairs (of course).

I fell in love with the Dubrovnik charm instantly and I couldn’t wait to explore it more… (day 2 below)

Dubrovnik, Day 2

Saturday was a rainy resting day and the city of Dubrovnik had to wait.  Sunday was a gorgeous sunny day again. Perfect! So off to Dubrovnik’s old town again to walk the city wall. The good thing about being first up, the tourist crowd is smaller.

There was no way around it, it was a morning for stairs. Lots of them! I guess if you want to go up you need to use the stairs and given that everything is on a hill, I walked lots of them. It was absolutely amazing though. I could walk all the way on top of the old city wall, with little coffee spots to have a rest at (not that I would do that) and finish where I started. I think the photos will tell the rest.. it was spectaclar and definitely one of my highlights! The City of Dubrovnik is definitely worth a visit! In my opinion much better than Split

The next highlight will be kayaking around the island tomorrow, Day 3 (in my next post)!
