Zagreb, Capital of Croatia
Should I visit Zagreb or not, that was the big question? After all it is the Capital of Croatia. And after a few amazing days in Croatia already (how amazing was Rovinj and Pula), I didn’t expect anything less of the Zagreb. Well…
I stayed two nights in Zagreb and it was one too many. I thought I should visit Zagreb as it is the capital city of Croatia and the city was supposed to be very nice. Well, let’s say my stay was one night too many (or maybe two?). That said, although the first impression didn’t convince me, Zagreb has some nice spots worth seeing. But I guess for my kind of traveling, I could have done with a brief stop, rather than an overnight stay.
From the outside Zagreb was a very dirty and rundown city that didn’t make me feel safe. I also did make the mistake of booking a place to far outside the old town so I drove most of the time rather than walked (unusual for me). I learned that it is better to book a place more central, esp. in bigger cities in Eastern Europe.
Should I visit Zagreb?
Zagreb is a city that has some great food streets and an amazing old and grand cemetery. So, to answer the question ‘Should I visit Zagreb?’, I would say, sure, Zagreb might be worth a visit. (Lonely Planet might have a few more crazy reasons to visit Zagreb here). The inner city was quite nice, especially the little street with all the groovy places to eat and shop. Those spots are certainly my favourites. Especially when you get to eat a gourmet burger with sweet potato fries (special treat from time to time). Delicious!
I also love walking through the farmers markets, although I can’t really buy much as I don’t do too much cooking when travelling.
I finished the day in Zagreb with my favourite visit to the Supermarket and a quiet evening at the apartment. Big day tomorrow! Hiking at the Plitvice Lakes (read here)!
P.S. When you are short on time throughout your Croatia travels, give Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, a miss. Really!
