I am on my way to Split and Klis Fortress, a city from Game of Thrones! And as I am writing this blog I realised, I really covered Croatia very well. Dubrovnik is on my list next (read blog here) and I am keen to see which one is better. Split or Dubrovnik?
I have seen lots of places and drove through the whole country. I might be a Croatia expert now so let me know if you have some questions for your upcoming trip. There is so many amazing spots to see. Happy reading!
Split
It was time to visit Split. I heard and read a lot about this Split, and, being the second largest in Croatia, it is supposed to be a beautiful city on the Dalmatian Coast. It has a fortress like complex at its centre, the Diocletian’s Palace, that has been erected by the Roman emperor in the 4th century. That‘s definitely old!
Otherwise Split seemed a little bit too touristy and modernised for me. It lost its ‚old city feel‘ and felt very industrial. Maybe because I have already seen so many great places in Croatia, I was expecting more? That said, I would put Split and Klis Fortress on your list to see, but you might agree with me and like other towns better. Except the Game of Thrones part of course!
After visiting Dubrovnik I will be able to tell you which one is better. Split or Dubrovnik!
So I did my usually discovery walk and found myself walking up to the Old Jewish Cemetery, which of course was sitting on the top of the hill, so, as you can imagine, lots of stairs! At least they gave a great photo opportunity as you can see. Otherwise the city wasn‘t very photogenic so I only took one photo of the fort. But then I followed the ‚Game of Thrones‘ trails which was pretty exciting!
Klis Fortress, Game of Thrones
I haven’t really watched Game of Thrones but the Split and Dubrovnik area were a big part of the filming, so I had to have a look. Apparently you can do a Game of Thrones Split Tour (here). I walked the Klis Fortress myself. But not before I had a big lamb on the spit lunch, the Croatian specialty. Delicious and highly recommended!
The Klis Fortress was on the list and, as it was right next to Split, I had a look. The Fortress is very impressive in size and location, it was quite nice to walk around. Just a few more stairs to get to the top but I could see how this fortress would work back in their days, protecting the city. And why it was perfect for the ‚Game of Thrones‘ set. Definitely worth a visit!
So, at the end Split and Klis Fortress were great to see, even if you are not a Game of Thrones fan. I didn’t even take many photos in Split. That said, I had plenty of photos in Dubrovnik, so make sure to stop there on your Croatian trip.
