The best spot in Germany – cycling along the Moselle River

I have been to many parts of Germany already, but this hidden gem, in the middle of the Moselle Valley, known for its vineyards and wine production in the Rhineland-Palatinate region (Rheinland-Pfalz) is absolutely worth a visit. It is absolutely stunning here. How did I find it? Pure coincidence. I was simply looking for the best spot in Germany to relax for a few days. Cycling along the Moselle River, combined with staying at the beautiful Schloss Lieser, and visiting the most beautiful town in Germany, Bernkastel-Kues, turned out to be an unforgettable trip.

It all started with a weekend in Düsseldorf. I’m a fan of the vibrant city, its charming old town, the river walks, and of course, the shopping. The people are friendly, and there are plenty of great options for dining and exploring. (Read more in my previous post here.)

From there, driving to the vineyards along the Moselle River didn’t seem too far. So here I was… in the second best spot in Germany. The first one? The Black Forest (Schwarzwald), of course.

The Best Spot in Germany

Schloss Lieser

The Hotel Schloss Lieser is the main reason I ended up in this stunning vineyard region. After an amazing stay in the city of Düsseldorf, I was looking for something more unique and rural as my next destination. I wanted to do some hiking and cycling. Then a photo of Schloss Lieser popped up and I was sold. I had to stay there!

As I drove toward the Schloss, taking in the beautiful landscape and vineyards, I already knew this was going to be a great trip. The castle is a standout as soon as you arrive in the small town Lieser. Its grand size, the walkway to the reception, the carefully decorated interior, and the spacious terrace for dining and relaxing, it truly represents one of the best spots in Germany. How amazing! I would highly recommend this trip.

After chatting with the Schloss owner a few times, I learned that there aren’t officially any ghosts in the castle… however, he said he could always arrange something. Fun! The staff were very friendly, the food was delicious, and the local wine was incredibly tasty and refreshing. Especially after I used the hotel’s bikes for cycling along the Moselle River. What an experience!

P.S. I’m now officially convinced that e-bikes are a must have. Especially if you want to explore the hills and vineyards properly! Maybe I should get one for myself?

Cycling along the Moselle River

As you know from reading my blog, I enjoy exploring new areas by bicycle. And in this stunning vineyard region, there were plenty of pretty towns to visit. The most memorable, however, was the twin city of Bernkastel-Kues. It’s certainly one of the prettiest towns I’ve seen in Germany. And I’ve seen quite a few! From Lueneburg to Lübeck and other Hanseatic League towns, this one is by far the prettiest. Located in the heart of the Moselle region, and not far from Schloss Lieser, I discovered it while cycling along the Moselle river and absolutely loved it.

From enjoying local wine and admiring the old buildings to cycling up the vineyard hills behind the town (yes, on my e-bike), the charm of this village, and the entire visit to the Moselle region, was beyond my expectations. The stunning weather certainly added to this incredible experience. I’ll definitely be back.

On the way home, I enjoyed the scenic drive along the Moselle River all the way to Trier. Trier is the oldest city in Germany and well worth a visit. The old city gate, Porta Nigra, dating back to 170 AD, is truly unique. However, I only made a quick stop in Trier, as well as in Luxembourg, before heading back to the best spot in Germany: the Black Forest and home.

It was an incredible getaway tho!
