Top 5 spots to see in Czech Republic

Top 5 spots to see in Czech Republic

I have travelled through Czech Republic a few times by now, so I thought it is time I create a travel summary for you. After all, what are the best towns in Czech Republic? From Prague to Cesky Krumlov and Kutna Hura, Czech Republic has plenty of beauty to offer. Did you know Karlovy Vary used to be the German town Karlsbad?

Prague

Of course Prague is THE must see of them all. I have been to Prague three times now. Twice in Winter and only now in summer. I love this city during either season. There is just something about this place that makes me want to come back! The old town square, the Charles bridge (built in 1402), the medieval astronomical clock (that has been covered for renovations for a while now) or the 9th century castle, Prague definitely belongs to the best towns in Czech Republic. It is the capital after all!

There is lots to see in Prague and easy to walk around. The Vltava river gives it a grand feel and the small streets make it cute and charmful. Filled with lots of restaurants, hidden cafes and jazz clubs it is a great place for a weekend trip. If you haven’t been there yet you’re definitely missing out.

Karlovy Vary

Karlovy Vary is only 45min away from Germany and my dad’s place and I can’t believe it is the first time I made it here. I can’t count how many times I drove passed it but never stopped. It doesn’t look very appealing from the outside but a gorgeous town it is.

Smaller and more colourful than Prague, Karlovy Vary is also known as ‘Karlsbad’. Karlovy Vary is a spa town in the west Bohemia region of the Czech Republic. The numerous thermal springs have made it a popular resort since the 19th century.
And what a colourful and stunning city it is. Whether it is shopping, relaxing in one of the many spas or just strolling through the long Start Louka street (no cars allowed), it is a fairy town that managed to create a WOW!

Cesky Krumlov (Český Krumlov)

Another little gem, and one of the top best towns in Czech Republic, in the south Bohemian region of Czech Republic, sits Cesky Krumlov.

I was there at the end of March, when the weather still had a winter chill in the air. My wardrobe was more wintery than summary however the cold didn’t stop me from being amazed with this town. It is bisected by the Vltava River and dominated by the amazing 13th-century castle.
Most of the architecture of the old town date from the 14th through to the 17th centuries.

Cesky Krumlov is a small town and it doesn’t take long to walk through it. However it is a must see spot! And given how cold it was when I was there, small was good.

More of the best towns in Czech Republic …

Kutná Hora

Leaving Poland (click here for more) and on my way to Prague there is a little town called Kutná Hora. Once a rich city due to the exploitation of the silver mines it helped to create a boom in the Czech Kingdom. In the 14th century it became a royal city endowed with monuments that symbolized its prosperity and wealth. The Church of St. Barbara on top of a hill is well seen before driving into the city and definitely a must visit.
I spend a lovely afternoon in one of the restaurants, sitting outside, eating delicious food and looking out onto a stunning view (the St. Barbara church). A small dot on the map however very very beautiful!

Sedlec Ossuary

In addition and as the final destination is the notable Sedlec Ossuary. It is a chapel adorned with human skeletons. Only 2km away from Kutna Hura (Kutná Hora), it deserves a seperate mentioning and spot number 5 of the best towns in Czech Republic.

The church is located beneath the Cemetery Church of All Saints (part of the former Sedlec Abbey) and the ossuary is estimated to contain the skeletons of between 40,000 and 70,000 people. Most of those bones have been artistically arranged to form decorations and furnishings for the chapel.
I have never seen a bone church before and I thought it was fascinating. What a cool spot to see!

Ostrava

At last I should mention that I did make a quick stop in Ostrava after leaving Poland. It was on my way and I needed a spot to have lunch at. Although the square is nice and colourful and the lunch was great, it didn’t make it into my top 5. But if you’re nearby maybe you can see for yourself.
