This year has been filled with travel, and I feel so lucky to be adding many new countries to my list. It is a big world, after all! Canada wasn’t originally on my travel plan (but then again, neither was India), but when I saw some return flights from New York with a stop in Toronto, I thought, why not? Visiting Toronto and seeing Niagara Falls sounded like the perfect new adventure!
Toronto City
Canada is known for many things, from hockey to maple syrup, famously polite people, Niagara Falls, the rocky mountains, and skiing. Toronto felt relaxed, especially after the hustle and bustle of New York, and also much much cooler. Which was great, as I could finally wear my vintage coats.
I loved walking around the city, from the distillery district to the waterfront park. It’s definitely a more urban place to live. And the colorful autumn trees on those cold, but sunny days were a beautiful contrast against the skyscrapers. But nothing stood out quite like the iconic, free standing CN Tower. It is soo tall, it’s impossible to miss.
Of course, one of the main reasons to stop in Toronto is to visit Niagara Falls. Just 1.5 hours away by car, I couldn’t wait to see this world famous natural wonder.
______________
Niagara Falls
There’s no official list, but Niagara Falls is often called the 7th or even 8th wonder of the natural world. Listed or not, it’s absolutely worth a visit. And not just because it’s free!
It is easily the most powerful waterfall on the planet, with over 168,000 cubic meters of water pouring over every minute, and that’s without counting the water diverted to the hydroelectric plants. This massive flow is the grand finale of the waters from four of the Great Lakes converging in the Niagara River Gorge. Absolutely breathtaking and an incredible natural wonder.
Seeing Niagara Falls in person is really unbelievable. I am glad I made the detour to Toronto. It was a chilly day in Canada, but no visit would be complete without witnessing this natural wonder.
And while you’re there, stop by the little town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. It’s the most charming little town in the area. The autumn colors probably added to its idyllic vibe, but it was the perfect place to warm up with a hot drink, and to pick up some local maple syrup. It is Canada after all!

And so…
And so, my first stop in Canada was amazing. I’m really impressed so far! The people are super friendly, the scenery is stunning, and Toronto is a great city. I stayed nights days and I felt it was enough to get a taste for it. There is more to see in Canada and I wanted to explore the nature and wilderness. It was time to fly from one side of Canada to the other. Vancouver here I come…
