During my two-week trip to Japan, I had the pleasure of staying at some of the best luxury hotels in Japan. From Tokyo to Kyoto and Osaka, each offered its own mix of Japanese style, beautiful interiors and excellent service. And a very comfortable bed after a long day of exploring. Always a highlight for me!
But what makes a hotel luxurious these days? For me, it’s more than beautiful interiors and an impressive breakfast buffet. The little details matter. Someone remembering your coffee order or helping you find a great local restaurant. A beautiful hotel is one thing. Feeling completely looked after is another. And you certainly find that kind of experience in Japan’s top luxury hotels, which easily rank among the very best in the world.
Japan is a popular travel destination, and cherry blossom season is only part of the appeal. The food, the culture, the cities and the beautiful countryside give you plenty of reasons to visit any time of the year. And spending a few nights at THE best hotel in the world, as voted by Travel + Leisure readers in 2026, was certainly one of the highlights of my trip.
So, without further ado, here is my personal list of the top 5 luxury hotels in Japan.

TOP LUXURY HOTELS IN JAPAN
1. Patina Osaka – Best for amazing views of Osaka Castle
At the top of my list, Patina Osaka was a beautiful way to finish my two weeks in Japan. And the views of Osaka Castle were absolutely stunning! I was glad I’d saved it for the end of my two weeks in Japan. Definitely at the top of my list of luxury hotels in Japan.
Travel + Leisure readers voted it the best hotel in the world in the 2026 World’s Best Awards, so I certainly had high expectations. And there was plenty to enjoy! The listening room, the wall of speakers, the beautiful décor, the restaurants and the outdoor seating on the top level. Every space felt thoughtfully designed, with plenty of places to relax and unwind. What a place to sit and admire Osaka Castle as well!
Furthermore, the restaurant P72 is not to miss as well. Its name comes from Japan’s 72 micro-seasons, with a menu that follows the changing seasonal ingredients. It’s certainly a popular spot amongst guests and locals.
And then there was the spa. An entire floor dedicated to wellness, with everything from massages to cryotherapy and infrared saunas. Certainly more than your usual hotel spa! This is certainly a luxury hotel to experience!
The best of it all? Being so close to Osaka Castle and having the opportunity to walk around it day and night. Perfect!

2. Capella Kyoto – Best for Japanese culture and luxurious comfort
Capella Kyoto was another highlight. Set in the historic Miyagawa-cho district, it brings Japanese craftsmanship and contemporary comfort together beautifully. I was amazed how Japanese culture and comfort could be combined so incredibly well. Kengo Kuma & Associates and Brewin Design Office are behind the design, and there is plenty to admire at this top luxury hotel in Japan.
The service is amazing, the staff really look after you, and the bar has such a welcoming, cheerful atmosphere. I would say the breakfast was also my favourite of them all. I really enjoyed it here and would come back here every time!
As you might have read, my Kyoto travel experience had its ups and downs. My hotel choice? No regrets there! And borrowing a bike to ride along the river turned out to be one of my favourite moments in Kyoto, made possible by staying in one of Japan’s leading luxury hotels.

3. Four Seasons Kyoto – Best for elegance and classic luxury
For elegance and classic luxury, Four Seasons Kyoto deserves its place on the list of Japan’s top luxury hotels. The hotel sits around an 800-year-old pond garden, giving it a setting that feels very much part of Kyoto.
I stayed here on my return to the city, and by then, I was quite happy to slow down. Apart from my pre-booked teppanyaki dinner, I didn’t feel the need to do much more exploring. So I relaxed, enjoyed the outdoor setting and had a drink at the bar. Sometimes enjoying the hotel is part of the trip too, especially when it’s one of Japan’s Four Seasons hotels.

4. 1 Hotel Tokyo – Best for a fresh, contemporary stay
New and amazing, I really liked 1 Hotel Tokyo. It was my first hotel on my Japan trip and it was quite different from the other luxury hotels I stayed at in Japan. Sustainability is a big part of the hotel’s approach, from reclaimed furnishings to systems that save water and energy. The natural materials and beautiful décor gave it a relaxed feel and it was lovely to come back to after a busy day exploring Tokyo!
It wasn’t as classic as the Four Seasons, but that was part of what I liked about 1 Hotel Tokyo. It had its own style. And it certainly deserves a place on my list of top luxury hotels in Japan.

5. Four Seasons Tokyo at Otemachi – Best for the bar
Although I didn’t stay here, I couldn’t leave it off the list. My reason? The bar, of course! It is a Four Seasons after all, but the property stands out among Japan’s top luxury hotels due to its memorable bar experience. VIRTÙ sits on the 39th floor, pairing views of Tokyo with a setting that blends Parisian style and Japanese influences. Quite a place for an evening drink! The queue to get in was long, but it was worth the wait.
I can’t comment on the rooms from personal experience, although I’m sure they’re outstanding. But the bar deserves a mention of its own. You don’t always need to check in to enjoy a little hotel luxury in Tokyo. Right?
