Sometimes my travel plans change at the very last minute. So, after my visit to Brisbane, instead of flying home, I took a plane to the USA. From Naples to Charleston, this trip is all about relaxing, spending time with amazing friends, and exploring both Florida and South Carolina. But how do these two destinations compare? Naples vs Charleston, what’s the difference, and which is the best place to live and visit. Especially if you can only choose one?
Given that I was already in Australia, it somehow made sense to continue across the Pacific and head to the USA. Yes, it was a very spontaneous trip, but after being invited to spend time with friends whom I met on the Ritz-Carlton cruise a few months back (read my blog here – My Ritz-Carlton Yacht Voyage), it was definitely an invitation not to miss.
Additionally, spending time with friends who know Naples well and live in Charleston made the experience even more special. I was excited to explore both areas through the eyes of locals. And for once, they looked after the itinerary for me. It was amazing!

Naples, Florida – Four Seasons Beach Club
Travelling in luxury, one of the newest and most beautiful places to stay in Naples is Naples Beach Club, A Four Seasons Resort. As a long-time lover of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, especially after my stays in Budapest and Bogotá, Colombia, it was an easy decision to experience the new property. And honestly, it was the perfect way to recover from jet lag, coming all the way from Brisbane – read my blog post “Luxury in Brisbane”.
So, what is life really like in Naples? As I continue exploring Naples vs Charleston, and which might be the best place to live and visit, Naples immediately impressed me. I didn’t expect to like it so much. Its relaxed atmosphere, beautiful architecture, stunning beachfront homes, and amazing restaurants are what Naples is all about. Therefore, it’s easy to see why wealthy retirees, entrepreneurs, and seasonal residents are drawn here to enjoy the sunny (and very humid) Florida lifestyle.
So, what is there to do here? Besides dining and shopping?

Marco Island by boat
One thing you absolutely must do in Naples is get out on the water. Exploring the coastline by boat gives you a completely different perspective of the area. We had an amazing boat day and made our way to Marco Island, which was absolutely beautiful. And the dolphins clearly agreed, swimming alongside us more than once. I have honestly never seen so many dolphins in one trip.
Could I live here? Surprisingly, the answer is yes. Especially during the European winter months. Naples offers an effortless kind of luxury and calmness that is very easy to fall in love with. Would I get bored in Naples? I honestly don’t think so.
The only downside. The hurricanes that return year after year, sometimes destroying what has just been rebuilt. Yet, it’s part of life here and you wouldn’t be able to tell looking at the stunning architecture. However, it is something impossible to ignore when considering Naples vs Charleston as the best place to live.

Naples vs Charleston – the comparison continues
Life in Charleston
Arriving in Charleston felt completely different to Naples, and that is exactly what made this trip so special. While Naples offers sunshine, beachfront luxury, and a relaxed coastal lifestyle, Charleston has charm, history, and soul. And staying with my friends made the experience even more personal and memorable. There is something special about seeing a destination through the eyes of locals. I met their family and friends, discovered hidden spots, and experienced everyday life beyond the typical tourist attractions.
Charleston immediately won me over with its beautiful old town, historic homes, charming streets, and relaxed Southern elegance. Think Scarlett O’Hara and ‘Gone with the Wind’. I enjoyed walking through the city, taking in the unique architecture, little boutique shops, restaurants, and the overall charming vibe.
Outside downtown, what makes Charleston truly unique is its collection of beautiful surrounding islands, each offering its own distinct beach community and atmosphere. Charleston’s restaurant scene is also incredible. From elegant seafood dinners to relaxed waterfront dining, thanks to my friends, I was able to sample it all. And each experience was delicious and unique.
My favourites? Restaurant Anson for the exceptional service and oysters and Legami for its amazing Italian cuisine and beautiful décor.

One of my favourite moments in Charleston was also a very relaxing Spa experience at Woodhouse Spa – a luxurious must do when here – as well as the sunset cruise with beautiful people and new friends. I fell in love with Charleston and I would certainly add it to the best place to live. Was it too cold in winter? I am not sure. But it seems Charleston has more to offer on everyday activities than Naples. Naples is definitely more relaxing.
So when it comes to Naples vs Charleston, it’s a tough choice. Charleston offers culture and charm, Naples more beach and relaxing vibe. Let’s summarise below…

…
As a summary, Naples vs Charleston
Naples and Marco Island, known as Florida’s “Paradise Coast,” offer luxurious Gulf Coast beach escapes, white sand beaches, and close proximity to the Everglades. You find a refined lifestyle offering beautiful waterways, boating and a very relaxed lifestyle.
Meanwhile, Charleston offers something completely different. Culture, history, events, and Southern charm. From its cobblestone streets and historic architecture to its vibrant restaurant scene and social atmosphere, Charleston feels rich in character and tradition. While Naples is about sunshine, beaches, and effortless luxury, Charleston is about experiences, connection, and lifestyle.
So, as the final summary, when it comes to Naples vs Charleston, the choice really depends on what you are looking for. Personally, I can see the appeal of both places. Maybe I should divide my time between both? I can’t see why not!
