The last week has certainly been one that many of us in Europe will remember. The heatwave was intense, and with temperatures reaching 39°C+, it’s safe to say we were all looking for a cool escape. I was certainly in need of an air-conditioned bedroom, so I decided to take a short city break in Zurich. Although I didn’t head towards the North Pole (Iceland might have been a good idea!), Zurich turned out to be the perfect destination for a short summer getaway. After all, it’s the largest city in Switzerland and somewhere I hadn’t properly explored before. Best of all, it’s just a 2.5-hour train journey from my home in Germany. Even if the weather remained warm, I could at least relax in my air-conditioned room and spend time by beautiful Lake Zurich.
So, what’s Zurich like? What is there to do? If you’ve ever wondered whether a city break in Zurich can surprise you, you’ll find plenty to enjoy. One thing is certain, Zurich is a very stylish city!

…
Zurich – the city
My original plan was to go hiking around Zurich. When in Switzerland, a hike should be a must. However, I quickly realised that the Swiss Alps are actually a bit further away from the city than I had expected. Remember my Matterhorn hike post? – The Most scenic Matterhorn hike. And as I didn’t have a car this time, I gave up on the idea and decided to enjoy the city instead.
And what a beautiful city it is. I’ve been to Geneva, Lucerne and Lausanne, and I found Zurich surprisingly relaxed. In Geneva, you’re surrounded by tourists, whereas Zurich felt much more local. And I really enjoyed that. Honestly, a Zurich city break offers a much more authentic vibe compared to other Swiss cities.
From attending an event at the Mandarin Oriental to discovering some fantastic shopping and dining spots, I loved exploring the city. Every restaurant I visited was excellent, especially the Italian ones, and the bars were stylish yet relaxed. There were also plenty of designer boutiques, alongside a great selection of second-hand shops. So, if you enjoy shopping, Zurich certainly delivers a touch of luxury. For me, this city break was perfect. Zurich has culture, class and style.

The Lake
To break up all the shopping, cycling and dining, I was recommended to take a boat trip on Lake Zurich. The locals are incredibly proud of their lake, claiming it is one of the cleanest in Europe. And I could definitely see it. Not only was the water crystal clear, but people were happily swimming in the lake. I couldn’t believe I’d forgotten to pack my swimsuit! Next time, I’ll definitely come prepared. Even though Zurich was cooler than many other parts of Europe during my visit, it was still hot enough that a refreshing swim would have been perfect. Especially during the week of incredible heat. Clearly, a Zurich city break isn’t complete without a dip in Lake Zurich on a summer day. I will know for next time!
Nevertheless, the one-hour ferry ride, taking in the stunning scenery and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere on the water, was the perfect way to end my trip. It is a beautiful part of Switzerland.
Unfortunately my days in Zurich were over quickly and it was time to head home and face a few more days of extreme heat before the temperatures finally returned to normal. What a hot week it has been! Read more below…

And so…
My quick escape to Zurich was amazing. From the shopping and dining to the relaxed atmosphere, the city was the perfect getaway. I met soe wonderful people during my stay, whether at the hotel, at the event, or simply while out at a restaurant. Everyone seemed friendly, relaxed and happy to chat. The best part about Zurich? Everyone spoke English. So I know I’ll be back very soon.
And if you’re planning your own getaway, maybe during the next heatwave, I would definitely recommend Zurich and Switzerland. Just don’t forget to pack your swimwear! You definitely want to swim in the Zurich Lake!

Just a few photos from Geneva and my trip last year. As it was only a short visit, I didn’t write about it.
