I’ve been back from my Italy trip for almost a month now – read all about Italy here – and have spent most of April in Germany. I have to admit, it’s been a wonderfully relaxing time. Spring in Germany can be beautiful. But without making this post all about the weather, I’m currently stuck indoors, waiting for the sunshine to make a comeback. These days indoors have given me a fresh appreciation for spring in Germany. So, what are the best places to see?
Cycling around Oberfranken has become my favourite pastime, and sadly, that’s not something I can do when it’s pouring with rain. Still, springtime in Germany brings plenty of cycling opportunities when the weather cooperates.

Oberfranken
I am planning a big cycling trip, so I am using the spring here in Germany to train before my 2,600 km bicycle ride. Yes, really! You can read the first blog post about my long cycling trip here: – Off to Spain. Cycling the Main River!
My training on the bicycle is going very well. I think I am improving. When I started a few weeks ago, a 20 km ride seemed like a long way. Now I am up to 70 km rides and doing fine. It feels good to notice the progress, even if some days are still harder than others. I feel like it’s time to venture beyond this region and discover some of the best places to see in spring in Germany.
Oberfranken and the Fichtelgebirge, where my dad lives, are a little hillier than I would prefer, but at least my legs are getting stronger. In addition, the scenery and landscape are just beautiful! After many years in Australia, I missed out on the four seasons, so experiencing Germany in spring again feels quite special. The fresh green fields, flowering trees and quiet country roads make the training rides much more enjoyable.
The sunny days – Spring in Germany
During my days off from cycling, I also made a few short trips that were just as enjoyable. Karlovy Vary and Prague are always wonderful places to visit, and both are only a short drive away. I never get tired of wandering through the streets of these beautiful cities. (You can read more about them in my previous post – Top 5 spots in Czech Republic)
Living in Germany means that so many amazing destinations are within easy reach. One weekend you can be exploring the Czech Republic, and the next you can be cycling through the rolling hills of Franconia. It is one of the things I enjoy most about being back in Europe.
The sunny spring days, the fresh green landscapes, and the chance to combine cycling with little weekend getaways have made this a very enjoyable month.
Munich
A trip to Munich was also long overdue. There is no better way to enjoy the city than catching up with good friends at a Biergarten. I lived in Munich for five years, so I never really feel like a tourist there. Maybe that is why I still haven’t created a proper post about this amazing city yet?
Either that, or I keep getting bad weather whenever I visit, except for one lucky afternoon, so the photos never really turn out the way I want them to. Ah well, just another excuse to go back!
Experiencing spring in Germany always makes me wish I could explore the outdoors more, especially in Munich. When the weather is right, spring here really is beautiful. I love being outside, whether I am walking through the city, sitting in a Biergarten, or riding my bike somewhere green.
I have been back to Munich many times since. However, I don’t often write about it because it’s one of the few places where I hardly ever take photos. Somehow, I just end up enjoying the city instead of documenting it. I think because I used to live here.
Waiting for sunshine
Around the same time last year, I was in Croatia, starting my first proper Europe trip. This year, I am here at my dad’s place, waiting for the sunshine. I am sure the sunny days will come. Won’t they? I suppose that is part of the anticipation that comes with spring in Germany.
As I am writing this blog, I have already checked my weather app twice. The next few days look a little more promising, so I might be back on my bike in Oberfranken soon. Hopefully. Oh well, I guess that is spring in Germany!
